World No. 4 Stan Wawrinka headlines Tuesday’s action as one of 16 singles matches on the schedule. Wawrinka enters as the No. 2 seed for the first time in his career in Cincinnati. In his last tournament at ATP Masters 1000 Toronto, Wawrinka advanced to the semi-finals (l. to Nishikori). In his 10th appearance in Cincinnati, the 31-year-old Swiss will face 19-year-old wild card and #NextGen star Jared Donaldson for the first time. Wawrinka has had proven success in Cincinnati in years past, reaching two quarter-finals (in 2014-15) and a semi-final run in 2012, giving him a 12-9 record. Donaldson, who is into the second round for the second straight year, is trying to post his first career Top 10 win (0-1).

First on Center Court is another #NextGen wild card, Taylor Fritz, who faces 34-year-old qualifier Mikhail Youzhny of Russia. While Fritz makes his Cincinnati debut, Youzhny holds a 12-12 record in Ohio, with his best appearance the quarter-finals 11 years ago (l. to Roddick). The 18-year-old Fritz, who is the youngest player in the draw and in the Top 100 Emirates ATP Rankings at a career-high No. 54, is coming off a quarter-final in Atlanta (l. to Isner) in his last tournament.
Following on Center Court is Fabio Fognini and 2013 finalist John Isner, who meet for the first time in almost four years. Martin) and last week he reached the 3R at the Rio Olympics (l. to eventual gold medalist Murray in three sets). Isner is coming off his first ATP World Tour final of the season in Atlanta on Aug. 7 (l. to Kyrgios in two tie-breaks). Isner has been the top American in the Emirates ATP Rankings every week since July 29, 2013. He is ranked at No. 22 this week, one spot ahead of Steve Johnson.
On Grandstand, No. 9 seed Gael Monfils brings a 2-1 head-to-head record against Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain. Both players have made the quarter-finals or better in seven tournaments this year, with Monfils winning his biggest career ATP World Tour title at the 500 level event in Washington last month. Carreno Busta has reached finals in Sao Paulo and Estoril and last week he advanced to his first ATP World Tour hard court semi-final in Los Cabos.
The four matches on Stadium 3 include No. 13 seed Richard Gasquet against lucky loser Adrian Mannarino, followed by No. 2 American Steve Johnson against Federico Delbonis. #NextGen star Alexander Zverev, a two-time finalist in 2016, takes on Japanese qualifier Yuichi Sugita, then No. 15 seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain faces Nicolas Mahut of France.
There are eight other matches on four outside courts, including last week’s Los Cabos finalists No. 16 seed Feliciano Lopez (vs. Mischa Zverev) and Ivo Karlovic (vs. Juan Monaco). Both are on Court 4. The 37-year-old Karlovic defeated the 34-year-old Lopez in the oldest combined ATP World Tour final since 1977 Hong Kong (Ken Rosewall d. Tom Gorman, 74 years combined).
