Robin Haase, the 2013 finalist (l. to Youzhny), won an all-Dutch battle 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1 on Tuesday against Thiemo de Bakker at the J. Safra Sarasin Swiss Open Gstaad.
Konstantin Kravchuk saved two match points to knock out fifth seed Guido Pella 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 7-6(7) in just under three hours. Kravchuk saved sets points in the deciding set at 5-6, 30/40 and at 6/7 in the tie-break. He will next play #NextGen’s Elias Ymer.
Horacio Zeballos hit eight aces past fellow Argentinean Agustin Velotti in a 6-4, 6-2 victory for a clash against Haase. Lucky loser Velotti replaced sixth seed and 2001 runner-up Fernando Verdasco, who withdrew due to leg pain. Elsewhere, qualifier Tristan Lamasine recorded just his second tour-level victory over Radu Albot 6-4, 6-2 in 65 minutes. Lamasine goes onto face third seed and last week’s SkiStar Swedish Open champion Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
Wild card Henri Laaksonen struck 10 aces to beat Jozef Kovalik 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(5), clinching the win on his fifth match points. He could not convert four match points on serve at 5-4 in the deciding set. Laasksonen now awaits the winner of eighth seed and 2007 winner Paul-Henri Mathieu or Marco Chiudinelli.
